Feeling burned out? This is why working less isn’t enough
I was among the many people that shared Buzzfeed's story on the "Burnout Generation" last year, including to you newsletter readers.
Fifty-seven percent of tech workers are currently experiencing burnout, which is why Fast Company's Jason Shen wrote this piece exploring how rest and recharging only addresses one aspect of burnout.
Besides feeling tired, burnout has two additional dimensions, negativity / cynicism and a reduced sense of professional efficacy.
"Work in of itself is not the issue; it’s the meaning that the work provides."
He offers three ways to break out of the burnout spiral:
Reconnect with others - "Weak social ties are as harmful to our health as being an alcoholic."
Reframe your goals
Remember to be useful - "By reorienting our lives toward meaning, we are more likely to not just endure, but excel..."
One. Whole. Team. Reinventing the Workplace
"Thriving means excelling -- in a way that is healthful and sustainable. It is the foundation of performance, a combination of how I fee in my day-to-day -- am I clunking along, breaking down, or humming down an open road -- calibrated with an organizational assessment of my performance, delivering work that matters to the organization."
How can organizations bring technologies to bear for individual thriving in ways that power organizational performance, businesses strategy, and competitiveness in the future?
This is the question explored by the Center for Transformative Tech and Deloitte Center for the Edge in this report on the future of work. Insightful read. (Plus it's a gorgeous PDF to view.)
