Amid Confusion About Reopening, An Expert Explains How To Assess COVID-19 Risk

This NPR Fresh Air podcast is very helpful for assessing COVID risk amid this reopening / closing state we find ourselves in. Here are some key points from epidemiologist Michael Osterholm:

  • The primary concern is airborne transmission.

  • Being outdoors & six feet distance is pretty safe, especially if it's breezy or windy. Being at the beach, as long as you are six feet physically distanced, is good because of the ocean breeze.

  • If you are in an Uber or indoors, open the windows for air circulation. Strong HVAC systems which circulate the air also do a good job if you are indoors.

  • There's a low risk from surfaces, door handles, food, and packages.

  • If your spouse or partner tests positive, you are highly likely to test positive too.

  • Wearing a mask helps prevent you from transmitting the virus to others. (Wear your mask.)

  • And this is going to be with us for a long time…

COVID framework: How does this thing end?

Physician Peter Attia tried to explain to his 5-year-old son where we currently stand in this pandemic. His son's questions are on a lot of our minds.

  • How much longer will we have to be careful and stay away from other people?

  • Will this virus ever go away?

  • What will vaccines change?

  • When can I see my friends without strange restrictions?

  • When can we fly again?

He addresses each of these questions in a recent post on his website.

Creating a Living Masterpiece with Michael Gervais

High performance psychologist, Dr. Michael Gervais (who helped take the Seattle Seahawks to the Super Bowl multiple times and co-founded a company with its NFL coach Pete Carroll), talked with humanistic psychologist Scott Barry Kaufman on The Psychology Podcast about his organizing principle, the North Star of Being...

"Instead of putting doing first, reorganize and decouple the idea that I am what I do. Decouple the idea that I only matter based on what I do.

What we are seeing are the best in the world are doing this very aggressive move. That they're saying, no no, hold on. I need to be first. I need to make the commitment to be in the present moment because that's the keyhole for high performance. It's also the keyhole for wisdom and love and beauty and true and good. So I need to be committed to the being first and let the doing flow from there.

So what does that mean?

Be present.
Be grounded.
Be authentic.
Be creative.
Be skilled.
Be first and let the doing flow from there."
